Browns Have Brought in Long Time Defensive Line Coach

Cleveland Browns are adding a veteran assistant as a defensive consultant for the team.

Cleveland Browns are making an addition to their coaching personnel by adding longtime defensive line coach Jim Washburn as a defensive consultant. The news was broken back in May by his niece but Browns defensive line coach Ben Bloom confirmed it today.

Washburn was the Tennessee Titans' defensive line coach from 1999 until 2010 and got his start in coaching back in 1976 as a graduate assistant with SMU. Washburn is 73 years old and last worked with the Miami Dolphins in 2016 and 2017.

Following the stint with the Titans, Washburn was with the Philadelphia Eagles for a pair of seasons from 2011 to 2012. Following that, Washburn was the assistant defensive line coach with the Detroit Lions for three seasons.

Between the 1980s and 90s, Washburn coached in the college ranks at New Mexico, South Carolina, Arkansas, and Houston.

Adding Washburn makes sense as he’s another guy to bring in that is famished with new defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz’s system. Washburn can help implement the defense through training camp and he will be another experienced coach that can give a piece of advice if needed. Notably, he’s worked with talented defensive linemen in the past such as Ndamukong Suh.

This is not a full-time hire and Washburn likely won’t be seen much. But he will serve a purpose in the upward trend of the defense.
