Washington Commanders

The Washington Commanders are on the road in Week 4 to face the Atlanta Falcons. Quarterback Jayden Daniels is out with a knee sprain, putting veteran Marcus Mariota back in the starting role for the second week in a row. Mariota will look to keep the momentum and lead the Commanders to another 'w' in the win column.

With other key players sidelined, the Commanders will need a balanced effort to come out on top. Both sides of the ball will have to contribute, with the offense finding ways to move the ball down field and the defense stepping up to limit opportunities for the Falcons.

This Sunday, the goal is simple for Washington—find a way to win on the road. A victory over the Falcons would not only keep them on track early in the season but also show that they can adapt and succeed no matter who is under center.

PREGAME

1st Quarter

  • Week 4 is underway. Atlanta won the toss and have elected to receive. Kick is out of bounds. First play of the game B. Robinson runs for 5 yards. Penix short pass to McCloud is incomplete. Shotgun formation 3 and 5, deep pass to a wide open Pitts for 26 yards. Falcons go back to the ground with a run by Robinson who gains 2 yards. Robinson again to the right for 9 yards and gets the first down. Hand off to Robinson, again for 9 yards. Hand off to Robinson, he fumbles but is quickly recovered by Penix. 3rd and 7, Penix throws to a wide open Robinson, but the pass falls incomplete. Falcons settle to for a field goal. Falcons take the lead with 3-0.
  • McCaffrey on the return for 29 yards. First play for Commanders, hand off to Deebo but is immediately stopped by Falcons defense. Mariota can't find anyone he's sacked. Mariota looks for McCaffrey on the next play but pass falls incomplete. Commanders punt the ball away. Falcons Agnew calls fair catch.
  • Penix with the handoff to Robinson for 9 yards. Shotgun hand off to Robinson and gains 3 yards. Penix with a short pass to London for 9 yards. Robinson on the next play with a 4 yard pick up. Penix finds London in the middle for 15 yards. Allgeier on the run for 3 yards.

    • Allgeier again for 5 yards. He tries again with the run but no gain. 4th and 2, they go for it and Allgeier gets the first down. Penix hand off to McCloud but loses 7 yards. Penix pass to London for 14 yards. 3rd and 3, Penix finds Robinson and gets 6 yards. 1st and Goal, Robinson with the carry and squeezes through for 4 yards. Penix finds London for a Falcons TOUCHDOWN! Romo with the extra point is GOOD! Falcons 10, Commanders 0.

  • McCaffrey on the return for the Commanders. He gets 28 yards. Hand off to Rodriguez for 2 yard gain. Rodriguez with a big run for 49 yards. End of the first quarter.

2nd Quarter

  • Rodriguez goes up for 2 yards. Mariota finds Ertz to the right for 7 yards. 3rd and 1, Rodriguez to the left but no gain. Commanders are going on it for 4th and 1, Mariota looks and finds Deebo for 4 yards. McNichols picks up a yard. 2nd and Goal, Mariota to McCaffrey for a TOUCHDOWN! Commanders are on the board, Falcons 10, Commanders 7.
  • Brooks on the return for the Falcons for 31 yards. He takes a hit and is injured during the play. PENALTY on the play, illegal formation on the return team. Commanders will kick again. McCloud on the return and makes his way through for 30 yards. Penix sacked he gets it out his hand, Commanders Sainristil picks it up and runs but play is incomplete. Next play, Penix deep left pass to London for 43 yards. PENALTY, holding on Commanders Lattimore. Next play, Robinson on the run for 2 yards. Next play, whistle is blown immedately after the snap for false start on the Falcons. Penix on target to Mooney for 15 yards. Robinson runs and break tackles for a Falcons TOUCHDOWN. Falcons add to their lead. Falcons 17, Commanders 7.
  • McCaffrey on a big return on 58 yards. Injury on the play for the Falcons veteran Mike Ford. Mariota low throw to Jaylin Lane for a gain of 7 yards. Mariota pitch to Bill for 5 yards. Pressure on Mariota, can't find an open receiver and throws the ball out of bounds. PENALTY on the play, on the Commanders, illegal man down field and intentional grounding. Mariota under pressure again but finds Deebo. After the catch ball pops out of Deebo's hand and FUMBLES but quickly recovers it. Deebo again for 11 yards. Commanders will attempt a 43-yard field goal and its GOOD! Falcons 17, Commanders 10.
  • McCloud on the return and gets 29 yards before being brought down. Hand off to Allgeier but Kinlaw wraps him up. Loss of 2 yards. Penix to Pitts and tight walks on the sidelines for 12 yards befor being pushed out of bounds. Allgeier on the next play but loss of 2 yards. 2nd and 12, Penix runs out of the pocket, tries to get to Mooney but pass incomplete. PENALTY on Commanders rookie Trey Amos for holding. Automatic first down Falcons.
  • 3:01 left in the first half, Penix deep pass to Washington is overthrown and incomplete. Penix quick throw to London and gains 9 yards. Hand off to Robinson, but is pushed backwards by Commanders Goldman. Two-minute warning is in effect.
  • Falcons go for it on 4th and 2, PENALTY on the offense, delay of game. Falcons punt the ball away and Jaylin Lane calls fair catch. Mariota throw to the outside to McNichols no gain. 2nd and 10, Mariota hits Ertz for the first down. Mariota, low throw to Lane and gets the first down. Mariota next pass almost intercepted by Deablo. Running play, McNichols on the carry for 2 yards. Commanders take a timeout.
  • Mariota is sacked by Falcons defense. Falcons take a timeout. :35 second left in the first half. Commanders punt it away. Penix not on the same page with London so the ball falls incomplete. Underneath pass to Pitts for 3 yards. Next pass incomplete. Falcons punt it away. Lane on the return and is immediately hit. End of the first quarter.

Halftime: Falcons 17, Commanders 10

3rd Quarter

  • Washington opens the half with the ball. McCaffrey on the kick return. Falcons player X.Watts injured on the return. Mariota hand off to Bill for 16 yards. Mariota scrambles but throws a deep right pass to Jaylin Lane, but flag on the play against Commanders Sinnott. Mariota short pass to McCaffrey is complete, but holding on McCaffrey. 1st and 30, pass to McCaffrey is complete. 2nd and 14, Mariota scrambles and is taken down from behind.
  • Mariota can't find anyone open, so he finds a running lane and get the Commanders first down. Bill on the next play for 2 yards. Quick toss to Bill weaves in and out for 6 yards. 3rd and 2, PENALTY on the play false start on the offense. Mariota deep pass to Moore is incomplete. Commanders attempt a 52-yard field goal and its GOOD. Commanders add 3 to the board. Falcons 17, Commanders 13.
  • Agnew on the return for the Falcons he gets 21 yards. Robinson with the a big play of 69 yards for a 1st and Goal. Commanders take a timeout. Fake pass to Robinson, throws a pass to Pitts for a Falcons TOUCHDOWN! Falcons extend the lead. Falcons 24, Commanders 13.
  • McCaffrey on the return for the Commanders. He yards. Deebo on the carry for 5 yards. Mariota fake hand off and then finds Deebo for 14 yards. Rodriguez to the left for 6 yards. 2nd and 4, hand off to Deebo for 7 yards. Mariota deep pass intended for Lane, but its INTERCEPTED by the Falcons X.Watts.
  • Robinson hand off for a gain of 2. Penix high throw to Robinson for 14 yards. Penix pass is INTERCEPTED by Sainristil. Commanders with the ball now, Mariota scrambles after being pressured. He throws the ball away. Rodriguez on the run for 2 yards. 3rd and 8, Mariota looking to Ertz but ball is overthrown. Commanders will settle for a field goal. They add three more to the board. Falcons 24, Commanders 16.
  • Agnew on the return they'll take the ball on their own 28 yard line. Hand off to Allgeier for 2 yards. Penix deep left pass Washington for 19 yards. Robinson on the run and gains 2 yards. Next pass to London is complete. Penix short left pass to Robinson and gains 17 yards. Robinson goes up field and gets the first down on the run. Allgeier on the run and TOUCHDOWN Falcons. They extend their lead. Falcons 31, Commanders 16.
  • McCaffrey on the return and wrapped up at the 24. PENALTY holding on the offense. Bill on the run for the final play in the 3rd quarter.

4th Quarter

  • First play, Bill on the run for 8 yards. Mariota deep pass incomplete to Moore. Mariota short right pass incomplete. PENALTY on Falcons for holding. Mariota is sacked for a loss of 2 yards. 2nd and 12, pass to Martin is complete and good for a first down. Chris Moore to the right for 9 yards. Bill on the run for 7 yards. Mariota scrambles and eventually finds Bill. PENALTY on Falcons and Commanders. Both offset. 1st and 10, Mariota hands off to Bill for 6 yards. Bill again for 2 yards shy of the first down. 3rd and 1, Rodriguez no gain. Mariota connects with Deebo for a Commanders TOUCHDOWN! They attempt a two-point conversion and finds Ertz. Falcons 31, Commanders 24.
  • Agnew on the return he gets 20 before being taken down. Robinson to the right for 5 yards. Robinson again for a yard. Penix scrambles for 5 yards and gets the first down. On the ground Allegier brought down after a gain of 3. 2nd and 7, Falcons keep it on the ground but only for a yard. 3rd and 6, Penix zips it down to Pitts for 20 yards. PENALTY on the play against Commanders for pass interference. Next play, Allegier on the run for 3 yards. 4:29 left in the 4th quarter. Allegier immediately brought down for no gain. Penix to London for 9 yards. Allegier on the run for 19 yards. 1st and Goal, Allegier gains a yard. Commanders call their final timeout.
  • 2nd and Goal, Allegier on the run for 3 yards. 3rd and Goal, Allegier run for a loss of 2 yards. 2-minute warning in effect. Falcons will kick for the three points. Falcons 34, Commanders 24.
  • Falcons kicks it off to the Commanders. Washington will take over on the 35. Mariota pass incomplete to McNichols. Mariota with a deep pass to Deebo and its incomplete. PENALTY pass interference against the Falcons gives Commanders the first down. Falcons call a timeout.
  • 1st and 10, Mariota with a pass to Deebo for 16 yards. Commanders will attempt a 42-yard attempt and its GOOD. Commanders add 3. Falcons 34, Commanders 27. Commanders will attempt an onside kick. But the Falcons recover. Penix will continue to kneel the ball to run the clock out. The Commanders fall to the Falcons in week 4.
