Raheem Morris Receives Another Vote of Confidence From a 49ers DB

Raheem Morris has the defensive backs bought in.

Another 49ers defensive back is loving how Raheem Morris’s defense is benefiting them.

It makes sense since Morris is a defensive-backs-oriented coach. First, it was Renardo Green, thrilled with the defense. Then, it was Ji’Ayir Brown, who raved about it. Now, it’s second-year safety Marques Sigle with another vote of confidence in Morris.

“With Raheem, he’s allowing us to be aggressive, play to our skill set,” Sigle said. “It’s making it for us to just not think and allowing us to be playmakers. I feel that’s better for us. I feel we have the type of guys to just go out there and play and not react.” 

Morris’ defense favors the secondary

It shouldn’t be surprising that Morris’ defense is favorable to the secondary. That’s been a common factor for every defense he’s run on every team he’s been on. That’s his staple. 

It’s part of what made him a great fit for the 49ers. Their cornerbacks fell off last season, outside of Upton Stout. Their safeties were massively underwhelming as well.

The 49ers needed their entire secondary to improve significantly this year. Now, with Morris at the helm, the entire secondary looks poised to break out this season. It could end up being the best season for a 49ers secondary under Kyle Shanahan.

The only time they had an incredibly strong one was in 2020. That was when Nick Bosa was out for the season with a torn ACL, among many other injured players that made the pass rush irrelevant.

This year’s group of defensive backs can be better than the 2020 one, even though they had Jason Verrett. The 49ers don’t have a secondary player as good as him on their roster.

But what they lack in stardom, they make up for in quantity. A trio of Stout, Green, and Deommodore Lenoir under Morris can be a top-five unit. And if Morris’ system can propel the safeties, they’re cooking with fire.

Given how every defensive back has been thrilled with Morris’ defense, I’d imagine they will all perform collectively at an adequate level. It’ll surpass last season at least, which isn’t an astounding bar to clear. 

Still, Morris appears to be the right coach to unlock and push the 49ers’ defensive backs. Time will tell if he truly is the answer.
