A Deep Dive Into Cam Ward's Career Game vs. Bengals Reveals 3 Key Signs of Life Moving Forward

Cam Ward accomplished a feat in Week 8 that a Titans quarterback hadn't since 2013, signaling a second breath for Tennessee's franchise QB.

In this story:

Last week against the Bengals in Cincinnati, QB Cam Ward willed himself to the best performance of his professional career.

Ward led the Titans to score 36 points, throwing for two touchdowns, which is the highest scoring game for the franchise in five years. It marked a career-high 304 yards passing for Ward while snapping a five-game interception streak.

It made Ward the first Tennessee quarterback to throw for more than 300 yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions since Ryan Fitzpatrick on Nov. 24, 2013.

Ward was able to accomplish these feats without his best target WR Carnell Tate, who was sidelined with a shoulder injury. Heading into the matchup, Tate led the Titans and his 2026 draft class in receiving yards and receptions.

There has been immense pressure placed on Ward to live up to his first overall expectations after a rocky rookie season. While the second-year pro hasn't made the leap many fans or pundits expected, he reminded everyone why he's a starting quarterback in the NFL by going toe-to-toe with Cincinnati's QB Joe Burrow on Sunday.

Here's a breakdown of what made Ward successful against the Bengals in a beat-by-beat recap of the game, even with the odds stacked against him.

Accurate and smart ball placement on the road

As was noted, Ward threw no interceptions against Cincinnati, and it was the most accurate he's been all season.

The 6'2" QB completed 26 of 40 attempts for a 65% completion percentage, tying his season-high that was set Week 2 against the New York Jets. However, in New York, he only threw 20 passes.

Ward began the first quarter, completing 10 of his first 13 passes, including five passes for more than 10 yards. He only had one missed throw in that stretch. One of the incompletions came from a dropped pass that hit the hands of a wide-open WR Calvin Ridley, and another was a throwaway.

Unfortunately, the Titans have the second most drops by any team this season, with 18, according to Pro Football Reference. Tennessee took a convincing 13-0 lead in the first quarter.

In the second, Ward completed four straight passes, including three passes for at least 13 yards to move Tennessee into the Bengals' territory. On the fourth completion, WR Wan'Dale Roninson bobbled a pass on a bubble screen that was ruled a fumble, ending the Titans' promising drive with a turnover.

Following a fumble on the opening drive of the second half by Ward, he drove Tennessee down, completing all four of his passes, including an in-stride pass to WR Chimere Dike for 28 yards to put the Titans in the red zone.

Tennessee would score on that drive with a goal-line rushing touchdown by RB Tony Pollard, capped off by a Ward 2-point conversion to tie the game 21-21 in the third. In the beginning of the fourth, the Titans topped off on a four-play drive where Ward split two Cincinnati defenders to hit Dike for an 11-yard passing touchdown. The score swung the lead back in Tennessee's favor 28-23.

On the next drive, Tennesse drove 68 yards down the field with a mix of runs and passes. Finished off with a perfectly placed dart on the back shoulder of Robinson, away from the guarding Bengals' defender, for a 15-yard touchdown.

While backpedaling away from Bengals rushers, Ward found TE Gunnar Helm in the end zone to complete another 2-point conversion. It gave the Titans a 36-29 lead with less than four minutes left in the game.

The Bengals would go on to put up 14 unanswered points and escape with a 36-29 win. Across Ward's 40 attempts, none of his passes were closely intercepted by a Bengals defender.

Per PFF, the Tennessee quarterback had an adjusted completion of 80% that removes dropped passes, throwaways and batted passes. By PFF standards, Ward only missed on eight of his 40 attempts. It's important to note Ward also threw for five passes for more than 20 yards, which is a career-high total.

Ward used his legs to make, and extend, plays

Against Cincinnati, Ward recorded a career-high 41 rushing yards. He and Ravens' QB Lamar Jackson are the only quarterbacks to throw for at least 300 yards and rush for 40 yards this season.

Despite being pressured on more than 30% of his dropbacks, the former Miami Hurricane only took two sacks. It's important to note those two sacks were pivotal. One resulted in a fumble, and the other pushed Tennessee out of field goal range at the end of regulation.

Nonetheless, Ward was far more mobile against the Bengals than he had been up to that point.

In the first quarter, he tucked the ball to convert a fourth-and-one on the Tennessee side of the field. Ward faked a sweeping handoff to Pollard and leaped over two Bengals defenders to convert on third down early in the second quarter.

On another third-and-short, Ward kept the ball on an option play with Pollard, resulting in a 14-yard gain in the third quarter. Later in the quarter, Ward spun past Bengals defenders to score a 2-point conversion. In the fourth quarter, Ward evaded the Cincinnati pass rushers to complete his second 2-point conversion of the game with a pass to Helm to give the Titans the lead late.

QB1 completed key conversions, both through the air and on the ground

Ward drove Titans down the field consistently, producing a season-high of 440 yards on offense. The Ward-led offense stayed on the field for a season-high time of 32 minutes and 11 seconds. Two weeks ago, the Titans were dead last in average time of possession per game because of their inability to move the ball down the field consistently.

Ward produced four of the Titans' five third-down conversions. Three of the conversions were from passes and one from a run. Furthermore, Ward converted a fourth down from a 14-yard rush and scored on a 2-point conversion twice, one on the ground and the other in the air.

Tennessee's offense was more explosive against the Bengals than it's been all season because Ward was beating the defense with a dual-threat approach. Ward showed that he can beat defenses with the pass and the run, which proved to keep the Titans on the field and in the game against a heavily favored Bengals team.

These are the signs of life Tennesse needed to see from Ward. Week 8 was the most important yet in his young NFL career.
