Cincinnati Reds Manager David Bell Shares Unfortunate Injury Update About Key Player

CINCINNATI — Reds second baseman Matt McLain isn't expected to return to action this season, manager David Bell announced.

McLain has resumed swinging a bat, but Bell told reporters that his 2024 season is likely over.

"Realistically, it's probably not going to happen," Bell said according to Mark Sheldon of MLB.com.

McLain suffered a shoulder injury in spring training that required surgery. He was set to return to action last month, but suffered a rib injury before he started his rehab assignment.

He posted a .290/.357/.507 slash line in 89 games last season with 16 home runs and 50 RBI.

David Bell said Matt McLain has resumed swinging a bat. While not official, Bell finally acknowledged McLain isn’t expected to play in 2024.

“Realistically, it’s probably not going to happen,” Bell said.
