Obviously, no G5 teams will be playing in Monday's 2023 College Football Playoff National Championship in Houston. However, perhaps fans of some G5 programs would take pride in knowing their program has some connection to this year's final game. Below are a few of those interesting connections.

- Washington head coach Kalen DeBoer spent the 2020 and 2021 seasons as the head coach of Fresno State. He was 12-6 in that span. Washington OC Ryan Grubb was in the same position under Deboer at Fresno State, and an assistant for Jeff Tedford prior to that. Co-Defensive coordinators William Inge and Chuck Morrell were also members of that Fresno State staff.

- Washington backup quarterback Dylan Morris will transfer to James Madison following the game's conclusion. Morris was the Huskies' starting quarterback in 2021, throwing for 2,458 yards with 14 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Morris will likely contend for the starting job there under new head coach Bob Chesney.

-Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh is the son of Jack Harbaugh, who had notable stints as the head coach at Western Michigan in the 1980s, and then Western Kentucky from 1989 to 2001. Jack Harbaugh also played at Bowling Green from 1957 to 1960.

-Michigan OC Sherrone Moore spent three seasons as a tight ends coach at Central Michigan from 2014 to 2017. He was originally hired to coach tight ends at Michigan in 2018.

-Michigan DC Jesse Minter 2013 through 2016 as the defensive coordinator at Georgia State under Trent Miles.

-Michigan defensive back Josh Wallace spent four seasons at UMass prior to transferring to Michigan for the 2023 season. Wallace has 28 tackles, a forced fumble, and four passes defended this season. Current UMass head coach Don Brown is a former Michigan DC.

-Michigan Linebacker Josiah Stewart transferred from Coastal Carolina this past offseason. He's second on the the team in sacks with 5.5.
