One thing that should be seldom, if ever, doubted is the athleticism of a football player with the last name McCaffrey.

Luke McCaffrey made one of the more notable plays of his college career on Saturday night. With his Rice Owls, surprisingly, already up 14-0 on rival Houston, McCaffrey hauled in a 32-yard touchdown with one hand with the opposing corner all over him.

Luke McCaffrey is the younger brother of current San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey and son of former NFL player/current Northern Colorado head coach Ed McCaffrey.

After the 2022 season, McCaffrey was selected by his teammates as the winner of the George Martin Award as team MVP after leading the team with 58 receptions and all-purpose yards.

Rice ended the first quarter with a 21-0 lead over the Cougars. However, the fourth quarter ended with knotted up score of 28-28. Rice finally closed out the historic victory 43-41 in double overtime.

Rice and Houston have played each of the last three seasons for a trophy known as The Bayou Bucket. Houston leads the all-time series 33-12, but Rice's win this weekend ended the Cougars' seven-game win streak in the rivalry.

McCaffrey finished the game with seven catches for 99 yards and two touchdowns. It was Rice's first win of the year, bringing their record to 1-1. This also marked Rice's first win as a member of the American Athletic Conference.

The Owls continue their season on September 16 with a game against another Houston area school in Texas Southern.
