After Georgia State head coach Shawn Elliott resigned his post to become an assistant at South Carolina, the window to transfer officially opened for Panther players wishing to go elsewhere.

One addition to the portal from the Panthers' side was linebacker Chris Smith. Smith announced his move to the portal earlier this week, Smith will have one season of eligibility remaining.

Georgia State had Smith listed at 6'2" and 227 pounds. He joined the Panthers in 2022 after two years at Garden City Community College in Kansas. At Garden City, Smith had a standout season in 2021 with 46 tackles two interceptions, and four tackles for loss. He has played both safety and inside linebacker at the college level. 

At Georgia State, Smith appeared in 10 games in 2023 and four in 2022. He registered two total tackles in those appearances. 

Smith is a native of Dacula, Georgia, 40 minutes northeast of Atlanta.
