NFL News: Patriots Release Cam Newton, Rookie Mac Jones to Start in New England
The Patriots released former NFL MVP Cam Newton on Tuesday according to Jim McBride of the Boston Globe. That means rookie Mac Jones will be their starting quarterback this season.
Newton missed three days of practice due to COVID protocols, which opened the door for Jones, who had been second on the depth chart for most of camp.
The Patriots selected Jones with the 15th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
Newton spent one year in New England. He threw for 2,657 yards and eight touchdowns in 15 games last season. He also ran for 592 yards and 12 scores.
The 32-year-old instantly becomes the top free agent quarterback on the market.
