CINCINNATI — Baker Mayfield has a new team. According to multiple reports, the first overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft is headed to Carolina to play out his fifth-year option.
The Panthers are sending Cleveland a conditional 2024 fifth-round pick in the deal and the two sides are splitting his final year. According to Mike Garafolo, Cleveland is paying Mayfield $10.5 million, while the Panthers are chipping in roughly $5 million and Mayfield is forgoing $3 million just to make the deal happen.
Viewing it through a Bengals-lense, the Browns just got worse at quarterback with the move. They are all but guaranteed to start Jacoby Brissett to open the season, pending a decision on Deshaun Watson's suspension.
Either way, Mayfield gets a chance to take the starting job from Sam Darnold and quickly seek revenge for how the Browns handled getting rid of him. Carolina hosts Cleveland in Week 1 this season
The Bengals face Mayfield and the Panthers at Paul Brown Stadium on Nov. 6.
