Cleveland Browns Free Agency to this Point

A wrap up of what the Cleveland Browns have done in free agency to this point.

Cleveland Browns got off to a good start in free agency when they beefed up their defensive line and added help to the secondary. The Browns have announced multiple re-signings along the way as well.

Cleveland has put pen to paper with center Ethan Pocic, cornerback A.J. Green, and linebacker Sione Takitaki. Cleveland ruled the three players as free agents they wanted back from last year’s team.

The Browns first signing of the legal tampering period came in the form of defensive end Ogbonnia Okoronkwo. Cleveland signed the former Houston Texans player to a three-year deal.

After a disappointing season last year for Jadeveon Clowney, the Browns have found their next edge rusher opposite of Myles Garrett. While with the Texans last season, Okoronkwo was 13th in the league in pass rush win rate at 19 percent.

The Browns agreed to a four-yea deal with defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson, who comes over from the Minnesota Vikings. Tomlinson immediately becomes the Browns best run-stopper in the middle of the defense. Tomlinson is a 29-year-old veteran in the NFL.

Cleveland’s signing of Maurice Hurst Jr. came as sort of a surprise. The defensive tackle has proven to be capable depth in the NFL but has not played since 2021 due to injuries. Hurst is a former early-round draft pick that was last with the San Francisco 49ers. Hurst expects to battle for a depth spot on the Browns with Tommy Togiai and Jordan Elliott. It is a low-risk, high-reward kind of signing.

Continuing on the efforts of adding more bodies in the middle, the Browns inked defensive tackle Trysten Hill to a one-year deal. Hill is a former early-round pick who has shown talent in the NFL, unfortunately injuries have stopped him from doing anything substantial. Hill last played with the Arizona Cardinal, where he ended the season on the injured reserve. Hill is another effort of stopping the run at 310 pounds.

After cutting John Johnson III, the Browns signed Juan Thornhill to take over his role. Thornhill was signed to a three-year deal and is fresh off of a Super Bowl win with the Kansas City Chiefs. Thornhill was a second round draft pick out of Virginia in the 2019 NFL Draft. Thornhill has made eight interceptions over four seasons in Kansas City with three of those coming in 2022.

Cleveland went out and added tight end Jordan Akins, who is a former teammate of quarterback Deshaun Watson when they both were with the Houston Texans. Akins is coming off of his best season with the Texans, where the 30-year-old brought in 495 receiving yards and five touchdowns. Akins will have a chance to take over the second tight end spot in Cleveland.

Special teams linebacker Jordan Kunaszyk was brought back, a player who could provide linebacker depth as well on the defense.

Cleveland added a gunner for the special teams in cornerback Mike Ford, who should have chance to dig in at slot CB as well.

Expect the Browns to continue adding in free agency prior to the NFL Draft. The goal of any good team is to have no glaring holes heading into the draft and the Browns still have that at middle linebacker.
