Browns DE Myles Garrett Listed as a Free Agency Winner
Cleveland Browns defensive end was recently noted as a beneficiary from the team's free agency moves to this point. Sports Illustrated's Conor Orr listed Garrett as a winner in a recent piece.
As we predicted, the Browns were going to attack the defensive line market to try to peel away some double teams from Myles Garrett. The result was Ogbonnia Okoronkwo, Maurice Hurst Jr., Trysten Hill and headliner Dalvin Tomlinson. This team will absolutely dominate both lines of scrimmage, and Okoronkwo should develop into more of a volume sacker now that he can play off the most dominant defensive lineman in the NFL.
Garrett had 16 sacks last season while no other teammate produced more than Taven Bryan's three sacks. Jadeveon Clowney had just two sacks opposite of Garrett. That production essentially ended his Browns career, along with the late happenings including him missing the last game.
Cleveland has added a talented edge rusher in Okoronkwo who will attack off the edge opposite of Garrett. Browns reinforced the middle of their defense with Tomlinson and Hurst. Tomlinson is the biggest upgrade on the defense to this point at defensive tackle, a place the Browns were beaten badly at in 2022.
Expect the Browns to continue to add to the defensive line through free agency and the NFL Draft in April. The team will have second-year guys in Alex Wright and Isaiah Thomas, who should take a step forward as well.
After facing the most double-teams in 2022, expect that number to lower a bit for Garrett in 2023, creating more opportunity for him to take down the quarterback and potentially make a run at Defensive Player of the Year.
