Early Geno Smith Concerns Could Leave the Door Wide Open for Jets QB Controversy

The veteran QB is not exactly instilling confidence as QB1.

As training camp moves along and the start of the preseason quickly inches closer, the quarterback room remains a major focal point for the Jets ahead of the 2026 season.

While projected starter Geno Smith spoke out about the multiple speeding violations and a domestic dispute with an ex-girlfriend that was ultimately closed, that does not change the distraction-filled offseason he has endured. Now, the focus has shifted to his up-and-down performance on the field and the confidence that he needs to instill as QB1.

Smith started off training camp showing why he is a massive upgrade under center for the Jets with his accurate passing and smart decision-making, but it didn't last long. His turnover-prone history has always been a cause for concern and a risk the Jets knew they were taking when they acquired him in a trade with the Raiders earlier in the offseason.

On Tuesday, there was some good and bad from Smith as the team took part in a joint practice with the Buccaneers. According to ESPN Jets reporter Rich Cimini, Smith "was sharper toward the end, in the red zone, but still not a great practice." He finished 10-of-16 with two interceptions, two touchdowns and a couple of sacks.

Despite the history of turnovers and Tuesday's uneven showing, coaches have made it clear how confident they are in their veteran signal-caller. That said, rookie QB Cade Klubnik has played well over the offseason and could lead to Jets fans wanting a switch early in the season, especially if the turnover woes persist for Smith.

While the offense has struggled to get on the same page at points during training camp, Smith brings his leadership and gives the Jets the experience they have been lacking under center. After all, this was an offense that scored the fourth-fewest points per game (17.6 ppg) and one that has utilized at least three different starting QBs in four of the last five seasons, so his return to the organization was welcomed by coaches and teammates.

Throw in his early statement at training camp under new offensive coordinator Frank Reich's scheme and a plethora of weapons down the field, and it is hard to see him not being the starter under center for at least the majority of the season, if not the entire 2026 campaign. With that said, Smith has thrown nearly as many interceptions (32) as TDs (40) the last two seasons, so there is at least an opening for someone with the upside that Klubnik brings to pose a challenge.

Klubnik has certainly looked like a rookie QB at times throughout the offseason, but the joint practices with the Buccaneers will provide an excellent test for him to show that the flashes can continue to outweigh the mistakes. For the most part, though, Klubnik has been one of the biggest winners of training camp so far with his decision-making, arm talent and accuracy.

In other words, Klubnik has outshined Bailey Zappe and Brady Cook for the QB2 role and should be in the driver's seat to serve as Smith's backup. Now into the third week of training camp, the Jets have to feel better about their backup QB role as Klubnik continues to live up to the hype and put himself in position to learn from the veteran Smith as he develops more confidence and familiarity with the offense.

While the coaches continue to support Smith and put the offense's trust in his control, the turnover-prone history is still hard to ignore, and it would not be the worst thing for a talented rookie like Klubnik to earn some more trust from fans for the starting position.

This appears to be Smith's job to lose for the 2026 season. Rightfully so for a team that could really use some stability at QB, but fans could easily run out of patience with him in the early going if the turnovers become an issue and the option is there to turn to Klubnik.

As much trust as Smith has earned so far with the Jets, this is a team that still needs to take that next step and show that it can win more games with the talent it has put together. If Smith does not make a statement out of the gate and the Jets are back in a familiar position, it may not take long for fans to lose trust and want a switch under center.
