On April 12, the 2023 New Mexico State lost yet another player from their back-to-back postseason runs. Dual-threat quarterback/tight end Eli Stowers has entered the transfer portal, seeking a new opportunity.

What was once a quarterback room of Diego Pavia, Blaze Berlowitz and now Eli Stowers have all departed from the program that made it to the Conference USA championship game in 2023.

In 2023, Stowers threw for just 99 yards and one touchdown. Most of his production came as a wide receiver, hauling in 35 receptions for 366 yards and two touchdowns. Stowers also ran for 108 yards and in total, had four touchdowns from scrimmage.

Stowers’ time in the portal will be a rather interesting one as he can still provide help as a quarterback, but his 6’4”, 225-pound frame can play well as a tight end or a big receiver in the red zone - scenarios in which the Aggies used him last season.

The leading candidate to become the starting quarterback for the Aggies is former Kentucky and Iowa transfer Deuce Hogan who’s seen action in four games throughout his collegiate career.

Although the background of going to two Power Four schools is there, the lack of playing time is a concern and outside of Hogan, the only juniors in the quarterback room are Brandon Nuñez and Jeff Davidson, so there is a lack of playing experience in the room. Howeverm the hope is that consistent playing time for Hogan is what will put the Aggies on the map once again in 2024.
