Former Texas quarterback Charles Wright is expected to sign with Appalachian State after spending three seasons with the Longhorns.

A former three-star prospect, Wright turned down various full scholarship offers from Group of Five programs including Louisiana, North Texas, UTSA among others as well as several Power Five programs to enroll at Texas in the class of 2021 as a preferred walk-on.

The Austin High product was eventually put on scholarship and saw action in four games over the course of three seasons and was projected by 247Sports National Recruiting Analyst Gabe Brooks as a possible Power Five starter down the road, but his quarterback comparison was former Mean Green great Mason Fine.

Wright made his debut as a true freshman in a 70-35 rout of Texas Tech at Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. Wright saw action in three games as a redshirt freshman, which included taking snaps in the team’s historic 49-0 blowout of Oklahoma (Wright also played in non-conference wins over Louisiana-Monroe and UTSA.

Wright didn’t log any game action in 2023. The 6-foot-1-inch, 203-pound Wright also didn’t record any official pass attempts or rushing attempts on a total of 16 career snaps, according to Pro Football Focus.

During Texas’ 2023 fall camp, Wright competed for a spot on the depth chart with former five-star prospects Maalik Murphy and Arch Manning but was able to show promise during sessions leading up to the season – with Wright’s arm talent being on par with Texas starter Quinn Ewers and showing steady accuracy, per Texas beat writer Eric Henry of Horns 247.

After spending the start of his collegiate career under the tutelage of Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian, Wright should be more than adequately prepped to head to Boone and compete for a starting role with last year's returning starter in Joey Aguilar.
