Kevin Huber Explains Why He Waited to Re-Sign With Bengals This Offseason

The veteran signed a one-year contract with Cincinnati last month.

CINCINNATI — Kevin Huber is back in Cincinnati with the Bengals after signing a one-year contract on May 2

The veteran punter is set to compete with Drue Chrisman for the starting job.

Huber explained why he waited to re-sign with the Bengals during a recent conversation with Dan Hoard.

"Knowing it was more of a punt heavy incoming class than normal. I'm not dumb. I know I'm not going to be the punter for the next 60 years. It's going to happen where at some point I'm not the punter," Huber said on the Bengals Booth podcast. "I wanted to sit back and see what transpired in the draft because if they drafted one I totally get it. It's just part of the job that we live in.

"When I got drafted they cut the other guys on the team so I didn't want to put myself in a situation where I would be almost trapped if they drafted someone."

Huber, 36, has spent the past 13 seasons with the Bengals. They took him in the fifth-round (142nd overall) of the 2009 NFL Draft. He's tied with Ken Riley for the most games played in Bengals history (207).

Huber still thinks he can punt and hold at a high level. He'll have to beat out Chrisman in training camp if he's going to keep the job in 2022.
