Every Patriots Rookie Who Made the Initial 53-Man Roster (And What Their Role Will Be)

The New England Patriots made it all the way to Super Bowl LX last year, and a big reason why was their rookie class. Several starters on both sides of the ball were in their first season in the NFL, and it seemed to work.

Now that we have this year's 53-man roster, one can assume that the new crop of rookies will be able to help out once again. Maybe not at the same rate as the 2025 group did, but there are plenty of rookies who can help fill in along the margins to impact winning football games.

This weekend, 11 rookies made the Patriots' initial 53-man roster, including eight draft picks. Here's all of them and how their roles might look this season:

1st Round, 28th Overall: OT Caleb Lomu

The Patriots' first round selection, Lomu had an up-and-down summer. There were some moments in the preseason where he looked the part, especially in the run game. But he sometimes struggled picking up pass rushers in practice and hasn't truly found a home yet along the offensive line.

He's gotten snaps at left tackle and right tackle, and the coaching staff hasn't ruled out the possibility of sticking him at guard at this point. Lomu projects to be the team's top swing tackle (or at least the second swing tackle behind recent trade acqusition Walter Rouse) to start the year.

2nd Round, 55th Overall: EDGE Gabe Jacas

Jacas didn't end up signing his rookie contract until the first day of training camp, and even after that, he didn't make his debut until he was activated off of the non-football injury list. Since returning to the field, he's shown skills when it came to pure rush speed, but the technique hasn't been nailed down yet.

On paper, Jacas has the talent to become a double-digit sack player. He's still struggling with setting the edges on defense and becoming a more well-rounded player. Considering the weak edge room right now, Jacas beginning his career as a backup doesn't feel good right now.

3rd Round, 95th Overall: TE Eli Raridon

Behind Hunter Henry, Raridon has been the clear TE2 for this passing attack. He's worked with Drake Maye and Tommy DeVito on the top-two offensive units, and looks fluid running his routes. Sure, he might have been rushed into that spot after Julian Hill's injury, but it doesn't seem like the third rounder is behind.

He won't knock your socks off in terms of statistical production, but think of him like Austin Hooper from last season. But Raridon is much faster, more athletic and younger. He'll become a big part of the red zone offense.

5th Round, 171st Overall: CB Karon Prunty

The Patriots' secondary didn't end the summer on the best of notes, struggling against the Cleveland Browns backups in the preseason finale. There was then ensuing conversations about which backup cornerbacks would make the roster. Prunty, the fifth round pick, ended up sticking ahead of veterans Kinle Vildor and Marcellas Dial.

Prunty's ability to play on special teams helped him stay and while he might not get as many snaps on defense as some of the other top cornerbacks on the roster (Christian Gonzalez, Carlton Davis, Marcus Jones, Charles Woods), he's played the run well in practice.

6th Round, 196th Overall: OT Dametrious Crownover

Crownover might not have made the roster had Marcus Bryant (ankle) not been placed on IR. But Bryant will miss the first four games of the season, and the Texas A&M rookie will stick around as a depth option at tackle. Crownover has gotten chances at right tackle throughout camp, but likely projects to have a redshirt season in 2026.

Because the Patriots traded for Rouse at the cutdown deadline, it pushes Crownover further down on the depth chart. Barring injury to either Lomu or Rouse, Crownover will probably be a healthy scratch for most of the season. He's got the talent to play both sides, but I wouldn't expect to see him a lot.

6th Round, 212th Overall: LB Namdi Obiazor

Obiazor also felt like a player that might have been on the roster bubble considering the veterans in the linebacker room. But Chad Muma didn't end up sticking around and Obiazor — who has plenty of special teams experience — earned the spot.

He had a nice pass breakup in the end zone of the second preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles, but he really didn't stand out in any other way during the summer. Obiazor did a lot of little things right, and he'll be a core special teamer, but he feels like Marte Mapu 2.0 right now.

7th Round, 234th Overall: QB Behren Morton

The Patriots like the emergency third quarterback rule, and that's probably why Morton ended up making the roster. After three weeks of game action, the Texas Tech gunslinger had some great moments (a game-winning touchdown throw to beat the Eagles) and some poor ones (a bad interception against the Browns one week later).

With Morton on the active roster, he'll be in uniform each week, but won't be allowed to step on the field unless both Maye and DeVito get injured. By keeping him on the 53-man roster, the Patriots avoid losing him to the waiver wire.

7th Round, 247th Overall: EDGE Quintayvious Hutchins

Hutchins really came along nicely during the middle of the summer and ended up beating out Bradyn Swinson for the final spot off the edge. The BC alum, who was the Patriots' final draft pick back in April, has the ability to play on special teams and that's where he's going to get most of his snaps from.

But he's had some nice moments as a pass rusher. Against the Eagles, he strip-sacked backup quarterback Cole Payton in the final seconds to seal the win. If the Patriots get some rotational snaps out of Hutchins while Harold Landry remains on PUP, that's a plus.

Undrafted Free Agent: TE Tanner Arkin

One of three undrafted rookies to make the roster, Arkin really never lost his footing during the summer. After Hill's injury, there was a dire need for a blocking tight end. Arkin quickly gobbled that spot up and never let Jack Westover or C.J. Dippre have any real shot.

Now, his role might get diminished a bit after the team claimed Cameron Latu off of waivers this week, but his abilities as a blocker can come in handy in an offense as fluid as Josh McDaniels'.

Undrafted Free Agent: LB Khalil Jacobs

Jacobs was dealing with a minor lower-body injury that held him out of the final preseason game, but he had already proven enough to earn a spot on the roster. That injury will end up holding him off the field, as the team promptly placed him on IR to make room on the roter.

The Missouri linebacker beat out Muma for one of the backup linebacker spots, and K.J Britt was just recently signed to the practice squad. There's room to grow as the third or fourth stand-up linebacker for the Patriots, and if Jacobs can get healthy, he could carve out a niche on this defense.

Undrafted Free Agent: CB Channing Canada

Maybe the biggest suprise on the roster so far. Canada, the undrafted cornerback out of TCU, never really felt like he would make the team. In fact, while his play on defense and special teams stood out, solely based on numbers, he felt like a sure practice squad lock.

Nope. Canada stuck around (his abilities in the return game might have helped his chances), and he's currently the seventh corner on the roster. He could get some reps as a gunner or as a kick returner, but don't expect many defensive snaps out of him just yet.
