Seahawks Free Agency Plans Are Very Clear After Super Bowl Win

The Seattle Seahawks have reliable players who are set to be free agents. The Seahawks might be more inclined to keep their offensive stars than defensive players.

The Seattle Seahawks are under considerable pressure this offseason to rebuild their roster and repeat as Super Bowl champions. Their biggest objective this offseason is to re-sign some of their best contributors who are set to be free agents on both sides of the ball.

ESPN’s Matt Bowen has five players for Seattle among the top 50 players who are set to be free agents in a few weeks. Not only are they listed in the top 50, but they are also given their best fit for where they should go for this upcoming season. The Seahawks have two players on offense whose best fit is to remain, while three defensive players might be best fit with another.

The Seahawks could re-sign both offensive stars

The Seahawks have star running back, and Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III, and wide receiver/return specialist Rashid Shahed set to be free. Both Walker and Shaheed have expressed their desires to return to the Seahawks for the upcoming season.

Bowen has Walker at No. 18 of the top incoming free agents, while Rashad comes in at No. 26. Their best fits are to remain with the Seahawks. Seattle finished the regular season ranked third in points per game (28.4), eighth in passing yards per game (228.1), and tied for 10th in rushing yards per game (123.3).

While other players have helped make the Seahawks’ elite and productive, Walker and Shaheed were the most dynamic and efficient players late in the season and into the playoffs. They have been instrumental to the Seahawks’ Super Bowl title and will likely be a bigger loss than some of the defensive starters.

The Seahawks might be best to let some defensive free agents go

Bowen has three Seahawks defensive players ranked within the top 50 free agents. Cornerback Riq Woolen is listed at No. 14, edge rusher Boye Mafe is listed at No. 30, and safety Coby Bryant is listed at No. 47. The differences between the three players and Walker and Sheheed is their best fits might be good for another team.

Bowen has Woolen’s best fit is with the New York Jets, Mafe’s best fit is with the Tennessee Titans, and Bryant’s best fit is with the New England Patriots, a team that the Seahawks defeated 29-13 in Super Bowl LX.

While all three players were pivotal in creating one of the most elite defenses in NFL history, they might be tools of an elite defensive unit. Bryant and Woolen were especially efficient starters, but there were reliable backups. The Seahawks might sign cornerback Josh Jobe and safety Ty Okada, who are also set to become free agents for longer and less expensive deals. It won’t be great to lose starters, but the Seahawks might have some new defensive starters.
