Just a month separates the end of this summer’s World Cup and the beginning of the new 2026–27 Premier League season. The modern soccer schedule is simply relentless.
While the World Cup has disrupted preseason preparations for all 20 Premier League clubs—some affected more than others—England’s top division sides have still been playing plenty of warmup friendlies ahead of the upcoming campaign.
Friendlies are crucial to building match sharpness and momentum before the term commences, while also offering new signings and emerging academy stars the chance to impress their manager.

Arsenal
The reigning Premier League champions played their first overseas friendly on Aug. 1, hammering Catalan outfit Girona 4–1. However, Mikel Arteta lamented a sloppy showing against Real Betis in Dublin, as the Gunners fell to a 3–1 defeat, before again losing 3–2 to Borussia Dortmund. Their final proper friendly ended in a 1–1 draw with Como.
Arsenal were also involved in England’s traditional curtain-raiser, the Community Shield, a week before the Premier League season begins, thumping FA Cup winners Manchester City 3–0 in Cardiff.

Liverpool
Liverpool are once again embarking on a preseason tour of the United States, which opened with a 4–2 victory over Sunderland in Andoni Iraola’s first match in charge. The Reds then beat Wrexham 1–0, but suffered a first defeat under their new boss against Leeds United, surrendering a two-goal lead in the 4–2 loss.
Iraola got his first taste of the Anfield dugout as Liverpool manager when his side fell to a 3–2 defeat against AS Monaco. The Reds rounded off preseason with a pair of friendlies against Como, drawing the first behind closed doors 0–0 before claiming a 2–0 victory at Anfield, with new arrival Jérémy Jacquet on the scoresheet.

Manchester City
As was often the case under Enzo Maresca’s predecessor Pep Guardiola, Manchester City have a light preseason schedule planned. Their first friendly wasn’t until Aug. 1, where they drew 1–1 against Inter in a repeat of the 2022–23 Champions League final.
The Cityzens were in South Korea for a short while, with their stay starting with a 3–1 win over the K League All-Stars and finishing with a 3–1 win over Atlético Madrid.
A concerning 3–0 defeat in the Community Shield wrapped up their summer.

Manchester United

The Red Devils started a spree of tougher matches with a 2–1 victory over Atlético Madrid and a 1–1 draw with Paris Saint-Germain as they tour Europe. A journey to Dublin to face Leeds United also ended in a 1–1 stalemate, although they were victorious in a subsequent penalty shootout.
Michael Carrick’s finished up with a trip to Poland, where they were beaten 4–2 by AC Milan and former manager Ruben Amorim.

Tottenham Hotspur
