The Miami Dolphins announced that they have signed tight end Jonnu Smith to a two-year deal worth up to $10 million. Smith, a former FIU Panther, previously spent seven years in the NFL with the Tennessee Titans, New England Patriots, and most recently, the Atlanta Falcons.

Smith spent four years (2013-2016) at FIU where he racked up 178 receptions for 2001 yards and 18 touchdowns. Smith's best season came in 2014, with 61 receptions for 710 yards and eight touchdowns. FIU went 4-8 that year. Unfortunately for Smith, he was never part of a winning season for the Panthers.

Smith was selected in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft. That marked the third-highest any FIU has ever been drafted, Jonathan Cyprien being the highest, going in the second round of the draft and T.Y. Hilton going in the third round, but with the 29th pick.

The former Panther has accumulated 219 receptions for 2,423 yards and 20 touchdowns in his seven years playing professionally. Smith's best pro season came in the 2020 season where he had 42 receptions for 448 yards and eight touchdowns. That season would set him up for a big payday in New England.

While Smith hasn't made it to a Pro Bowl yet in his career, the Dolphins add a very consistent piece to the Mike McDaniel offense.
