Cincinnati Reds Close to Breaking Obscure Franchise Record

The Reds beat the Phillies 9-6 in the series opener on Friday.

The Cincinnati Reds are the only team in Major League Baseball that has yet to be swept in a series this season.

They beat the Phillies in the series opener on Friday 9-6 to continue the streak.

That makes 29 straight series to begin the season without getting swept, which is the third-longest streak to start a season in franchise history, according to Joel Luckhaupt.

The 1970 Reds were swept in their 33rd series by the Cubs and the 1989 Reds were swept in their 31st series by the Phillies.

It's an odd statistic for a team that sits just four games above .500, but it does show this team has some fight and resiliency.

The Reds and Phillies will play game two of the series on Saturday at 4:05 ET. Nick Lodolo will start on the mound for Cincinnati.
