Back In The Day NBA, May 10, 1987: Eric "Sleepy" Floyd Goes For 51 Points  In Warriors' Upset Of Showtime Lakers

Eric "Sleepy" Floyd had an NBA-record 29-point quarter to lead Golden State past the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 4 of 1987 playoffs

It is often mentioned among the greatest playoff performances in NBA history.

It was 36 years ago when Golden State Warriors guard Eric "Sleepy" Floyd took it upon himself to defeat the Los Angeles Lakers 129-121 in Game 4 of the Western Conference playoffs.

Floyd finished with 51 points, including an NBA-record 29 in the fourth quarter.

“There was one time when I was guarding him,” Lakers forward Michael Cooper told the San Jose Mercury News, “and he took a shot that I was sure would go over the rim. But somehow, the ball hung on it and bounced into the basket. I’ve seen Magic Johnson and Kareem have those kind of games. Every time, it goes in.”

The celebration was short-lived for the Warriors because their season ended with a loss in Game 5.
