Kylian Mbappe Is Leading Candidate To Become New France Captain

Kylian Mbappe has been tipped to become the new captain of the French national team.

Hugo Lloris had been France's first-choice skipper since 2012 but the 36-year-old goalkeeper retired from international soccer after the 2022 World Cup final.

Defender Raphael Varane, 29, had been seen as the most likely replacement for Lloris but this week he too announced his retirement from international soccer.

Steve Mandanda, 37, and Karim Benzema, 35, have also called time on their France careers in recent months.

According to Get France Football News, Mbappe is now the leading candidate to be appointed as captain.

Mbappe is only 24 but he is already among France's most experienced players when it comes to international caps.

The Paris Saint-Germain forward has represented his country 59 times, including in two World Cup finals.

Mbappe scored in the 2018 final as a teenager when France beat Croatia 4-2 in Moscow.

He then netted a hat-trick against Argentina in the 2022 final in Qatar, only for France to lose in a penalty shootout.
