Four Bills' Veterans in Danger of Losing Roster Spots Heading into Browns Matchup

There's less than two weeks until the NFL's roster cut-down day, which makes Saturday's preseason game between Buffalo and Cleveland even more important for some players on the roster.

The Buffalo Bills had a busy few days this past week as the team held a second open practice to the public at the new Highmark Stadium on Tuesday in Orchard Park before traveling to Ohio for a joint training camp practice with the Cleveland Browns on Thursday afternoon.

The dual session was a precursor to Saturday’s preseason game between the two squads at Huntington Bank Field in Cleveland, Ohio, which will mark the second exhibition match of the summer for both franchises.

Cut-down day in the NFL is less than two weeks away on August 30, so the matchup with the Browns—although it may not count officially—will be critical for many players on the bottom half of Buffalo’s roster.

Here are four veterans who are in danger of losing their spots on the 53-man roster this season.

OL Sedrick Van Pran-Granger

Coming into the offseason, many outside observers thought that former 2024 fifth-round pick Sedrick Van Pran-Granger would be in line for the top backup spot in Buffalo behind starting center Connor McGovern for the 2026 regular season.

And, with McGovern currently still sidelined with a soft-tissue injury that he sustained during Buffalo’s “Return of the Blue and Red” practice at Highmark Stadium on August 8, one would have thought it’d be Van Pran-Granger that stepped in during McGovern’s somewhat lengthy absence.

While that has happened on occasion, it’s mostly been recent free-agent signing Llloyd Cushenberry III that has slid into that role for the better part of two weeks for the Bills.

Things look to be going smoothly so far this summer for the former Bronco and TItan interior lineman, too, which shouldn’t be a surprise given that the 28-year-old has started 80 games since entering the league out of LSU in 2020.

The competition isn’t over yet, but Van Pran-Granger’s roster spot is officially on notice.

Might he end up as a trade candidate at the end of this month? There are a few NFL teams in need of centers after recent injuries in training camp, so it could happen.

Watch this player closely moving forward, Bills Mafia.

S Geno Stone

When the Bills signed seventh-year veteran safety Geno Stone to a one-year deal on March 16, it was a bit of a surprise, especially considering that Buffalo had just inked fellow veteran defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson to a one-year contract of his own on March 12.

Gardner-Johnson seemingly signed with the intention of being third-year safety Cole Bishop’s running mate this upcoming regular season in Western New York, so the extra addition of Stone was a bit puzzling by team president/general manager Brandon Beane.

The 27-year-old started 53 regular-season games over the last five years between his time with Cincinnati and Baltimore, but so far this summer for the Bills he’s been stuck behind Gardner-Johnson and Bishop—in spite of injuries to both—while also being in a heated competition with players like Damar Hamlin, Sam Franklin Jr., and rookie Jalon Kilgore for a depth role.

Stone, even though he’s had prominent roles in previous years during his other NFL stops, just might be on the outside looking in when it comes to cut-down day in a little over a week.

He’ll need to show something to the coaching staff over the next two preseason games.

P Mitch Wishnowsky

Not much really needs to be written here.

At the beginning of training camp at St. John Fisher University, it appeared as if the Bills were going to give veteran punter Mitch Wishnowsky every chance to win the punting job in Orchard Park, New York, this season.

However, since the end of July, seventh-round rookie Tommy Doman Jr. has silently been creeping his way toward capturing the starting job.

During Tuesday’s open practice to the public at Highmark Stadium, it was Doman Jr. who was up first during all of the punting drills, and he even received all of the holding reps during the preseason opener against the Carolina Panthers despite not getting the opportunity to punt during the game.

Needless to say, Doman Jr. will likely be the punter this season unless Wishnowsky can pull off a major comeback in the coming weeks.

It’ll be interesting to see.

OL Chase Lundt

Although second-year offensive lineman Chase Lundt entered the NFL as a bit of a tweener along the offensive line after being drafted by the Bills in the sixth round last spring, the former University of Connecticut offensive tackle somehow managed to earn a 53-man roster spot with Buffalo as a rookie.

He wasn’t very impactful, though, as he managed to only dress for two games all season long.

And, given that the Bills have since signed veteran interior lineman Austin Corbett in free agency earlier this spring, while also drafting rookie tackle Jude Bowry and rookie guard Ar’Maj Reed-Adams this past April, it’s not hard to see that Lundt’s time in Western New York might be short lived.

The 26-year-old hasn’t done much in terms of standing out—either negatively or positively—through training camp thus far, so in order to earn a roster spot again he’ll have to stand out in a big way over this final week-and-a-half stretch.

The preseason games against the Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers are going to have huge implications for the 6-foot-7, 304-pound Texas native’s NFL future.
