Instant Analysis: Bengals Land Speedy Safety Tycen Anderson in Fifth Round of 2022 NFL Draft

Cincinnati's defense has added three speedsters in this draft class.

CINCINNATI — The Bengals have a need for speed.

Cincinnati selected Toledo safety Tycen Anderson with the 166th pick in the 2022 NFL Draft on Saturday.

The 22-year-old is one of the most athletic safeties in this class. He ran a 4.36 40-yard dash, which is a tick faster than first-rounder Dax Hill (4.38) and second-rounder Cam Taylor-Britt (4.38).

Anderson has a plethora of special teams experience, but didn't return punts and only returned one kick in his five seasons at Toledo. That doesn't mean he won't be in the mix at returner, but he has experience being a gunner in college.

It isn't just speed with Anderson, who finished with 237 career tackles and 21 passes defensed in college. He also has the quickness that NFL teams covet.

Anderson ran a 6.64-second 3-cone drill, which is in the 97th percentile among safeties.

"You'll always hear the team straight-line fast and some guys can't stop. And stopping and starting is a huge part of it because the wide-out knows where they're going and we don't," Bengals defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo said. "If the guys can't put the breaks on, then they're gonna give up a lot of completions."
