Zac Taylor Updates Bengals Plan At Guard Entering NFL Draft Month

CINCINNATI — Zac Taylor's comments at the NFL's Annual Meeting didn't spell out a guard signing from the Bengals anytime soon. 

He did an extensive chat with the media on Monday and Cincinnati sounds like it won't be adding any more outside help at the guard position until after the NFL Draft (if at all). The Bengals signed Lucas Patrick to a one-year deal this month after releasing Alex Cappa, but have not made anymore exterior moves at that spot.

"I think right now at guard we will get to the draft and then evaluate where we're at from there," Taylor told The Enquirer's Kelsey Conway and other reporters.

Cincinnati currently has five guards rostered: Patrick, Cordell Volson, Jaxson Kirkland, Tashawn Manning, and Cody Ford.

They fielded arguably the worst starting options in the NFL at those two spots last season in Volson and Cappa. According to PFF, Cappa finished last among all NFL guards in QB pressures (51), hurries (36), and sacks allowed (eight, tied with Houston's Shaq Mason). Volson wasn't much better than Cappa, he actually ranked second in total pressures allowed among guards (43) and gave up six sacks (t-third worst).

It's a position that could still look very different this fall.
