Arsenal Beat Zurich To Bypass Europa League Play-Offs But Man United Fall Short
Arsenal qualified for the UEFA Europa League's round of 16 on Thursday night by beating Zurich 1-0 at the Emirates Stadium.
The result confirmed the Gunners as Group A winners, meaning they get to bypass the Europa League play-off round.
Kieran Tierney scored Arsenal's only goal on what proved to be a nervy night for the home side.
PSV Eindhoven won 2-1 away to Bodo/Glimt, meaning Arsenal would drop to second place if they failed to claim three points.
Zurich briefly thought that they had cancelled out Arsenal's lead in the second half but Adrian Guerrero saw his goal disallowed for offside.
Arsenal's next European fixture will be in March.
But Manchester United must win a knockout play-off in February to join Arsenal in the last 16.
United won 1-0 in Spain against Real Sociedad on Thursday night thanks to Alejandro Garnacho's first goal for the club.
It was set up by Cristiano Ronaldo in the 17th minute.
But United fell just short of winning Group E, having needed to score again to topple Sociedad, who finished first on goal difference.
United will now face one of the teams that finished third in the Champions League group stage.
The draw for the play-off round will be made on Monday, with United's potential opponents including Barcelona, Juventus, Ajax and Sevilla.
