Real Madrid Eye David De Gea After ACL Injury Rules Thibaut Courtois Out For Majority Of 2023/24 Season

Real Madrid are expecting goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to miss the majority of the 2023/24 season with a serious knee injury.

Courtois has ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee and will undergo surgery in the coming days.

The 31-year-old Belgium stopper - who was named in the FIFA FIFPRO Men's World 11 last year - has been a key player for Real since moving to Madrid from Chelsea in 2018.

His injury is likely to force the Spanish giants into the transfer market.

According to Sky Sports, Real have already approached representatives of former Manchester United keeper David de Gea.

Spain international De Gea is currently a free agent after leaving Old Trafford at the end of last season.

De Gea spent 12 years in Manchester and made 545 first-team appearances for the Red Devils.

He was voted as United's Player of the Season four times.

De Gea joined United from Real's city rivals Atletico Madrid in 2011.

He almost returned to the Spanish capital in 2015 but his proposed move to Real fell through because the necessary paperwork was submitted two minutes after the transfer deadline had passed.

Should De Gea agree a move to the Bernabeu this summer, the deal is unlikely to be completed in time for him to make his Real debut in the club's first game of the season.

Ukraine's Andriy Lunin is expected to start on Saturday when Madrid begin their campaign in La Liga with a trip to Athletic Bilbao.
