Calgary Stampeders Make Moves, Re-Sign All-Star Center Sean McEwen

The Calgary Stampeders made a flurry of moves on Wednesday and Thursday, signing two wide receivers and a former NFL defensive end and re-signing two linemen, including All-Star center Sean McEwen.

Along with the announcement of the change at team president, the Calgary Stampeders made plenty of changes to their roster as well.

The team first announced the re-signings of All-Star center Sean McEwen and defensive lineman Brad Muhammad. Calgary also signed wide receivers Ishmael Hyman and Malachi Wideman, and on Thursday, the Stampeders signed former NFL defensive lineman Sharif Finch.

McEwen’s re-signing was big for the Stampeders, as the team understands the importance of his leadership to the offense.

“Sean is our leader on the offensive line,” Stampeders general manager and coach Dave Dickenson said. “He’s a durable guy we can count on and he’s motivated to win a championship. We’re happy to get him back.”

McEwen has been a CFL West All-Star for three years in a row, all of which he spent with the Stampeders. He made 17 starts at center last year as part of the unit that allowed just 34 sacks.

He has also been a CFL All-Star three times in his career, playing in 115 regular-season games and winning a Grey Cup in 2017. McEwen started his career with the Toronto Argonauts when he was selected in the first round of the 2015 CFL Draft. He earned a CFL East All-Star selection once during his time in Toronto.

Former NFL defensive lineman Sharif Finch signed with the Calgary Stampeders on Thursday.

Muhammad started in six games last season for Calgary, playing in eight of them. He registered 20 tackles, one tackle for loss, three special teams tackles and one interception. Muhammad was also a member of the Ottawa Redblacks and made 84 tackles, four tackles for loss, eight special teams tackles, 11 pass deflections, three interceptions and one forced fumble in 29 games.

Hyman played in the USFL last year with the Michigan Panthers and Pittsburg Maulers, catching 15 passes for 152 yards. He has also spent time with four NFL teams, seeing the field for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and recording two receptions for 34 yards. Hyman was also a member of the Orlando Apollos of the Alliance of American Football.

Wideman signed with the San Antonio Brahmas late last year before the XFL and USFL merged. At Jackson State, he caught 37 passes for 589 yards and 13 touchdowns in 17 games.

Finch recently was on the Seattle Sea Dragons for the 2023 season. He played 28 games in the NFL with the Tennessee Titans, New York Jets and New Orleans Saints. His career stats include 46 tackles, six tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.

The Stampeders also signed or re-signed four other players to the active roster this week.
