It’s Week Ten in the college football world which means programs are making their case for a conference title run. Let’s take a look at four G5 contests which have interesting storylines and have a chance to play a major part in bowl implications or who may represent their league in championship games.

South Florida at Memphis

Alex Golesh’s USF Bulls have been one of the more pleasant surprises of the CFB season. We’ve profiled the program’s struggles under Jeff Scott and the end of the Charlie Strong era in Tampa during a previous edition of this series. This year’s group needs two wins to go bowling and while their best chances are likely against Temple and Charlotte, they could throw a huge monkey wrench into the AAC title race as Memphis are looking to keep pace with Tulane, SMU and UTSA. The Tigers have their version of the “triplets” in quarterback Seth Henigan, running back Blake Watson and wideout Roc Taylor – all of whom should be in line for all-conference spots come season’s end.

James Madison at Georgia State

In an ideal world, Saturday’s contest between James Madison and Georgia State would have conference title implications for both teams. But, as is well-known, JMU aren’t eligible for postseason play or a conference title. Instead, the Dukes are looking to play spoiler to Shawn Elliott’s Panthers, who are trying to keep pace with Georgia Southern in the SBC East Race.

Boise State at Fresno State

For a 7-1 club, Jeff Tedford’s Fresno State Bulldogs aren’t getting a ton of love from the oddsmakers – maybe the surprising UNLV Rebels have the hearts of the sportsbooks. Fresno State enters the contest at home as only 2.5-point favorites over an inconsistent Boise team, who are looking keep a winning record and their bowl chances. Broncos running back Ashton Jeanty and wide receiver Eric McAllister are nearing 1,000-yard seasons.

Kennesaw State at Sam Houston State

The final contest we’re taking a look at isn’t the most intriguing on paper. However, K.C. Keeler’s Sam Houston State team have come close on several occasions to finding the win column this season, with four losses coming by one-score or less. Their best chance yet comes in the form of Kennesaw State, who will be joining Conference USA in time for the 2024-25 season. Expect the Bearkats to establish that they’re still head and shoulders above the FCS Owls.
