CINCINNATI — Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson had one of the best rookie seasons in NFL history in 2020, finishing with 88 receptions for 1,400 yards and seven touchdowns.
The 21-year-old's first year in the pros looked a lot like his final season at LSU when he compiled 111 receptions for 1,540 yards and 18 touchdowns.
He had a special connection with Joe Burrow in college and he appeared to have the same rapport with Kirk Cousins last season. Jefferson was asked to compare both quarterbacks during a recent appearance on The Herd With Colin Cowherd.
"Kirk and Joe throw similar balls," Jefferson said. "They're not the strongest arms, but they're going to get it to you exactly where you need them to throw it. The thing about Joe that's a little bit different—I feel like Joe has a little bit more swagger. He has that confidence on the field and he's not scared to get hit. I feel like as a quarterback, that's a big trait to have, especially to be as young as he is. He's a phenomenal quarterback."
Jefferson wasn't shy about praising Burrow, but sounded lukewarm on Cousins, especially when asked about the Vikings reported interest in former Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields.
"We have to build on for after Kirk or whatever the case may be," Jefferson said. "Having Justin Fields brings a little bit more pressure to other teams by having a dominant quarterback like he is."
The Vikings didn't get Fields in the draft because the Bears traded up to land the former Ohio State star. Minnesota did select Texas A&M quarterback Kellen Mond in the second round.
Cousins isn't the long-term solution answer in Minnesota. Most people know that, including Jefferson. His honesty is refreshing.
The good news for Cousins is he'll get a chance to beat Burrow and the Bengals this year.
Cincinnati opens the 2021 season at home against Minnesota. The full schedule will be released on Wednesday night.
