Ottawa Redblacks Quarterback Competition Heating Up After Latest Signings

The Ottawa Redblacks released Tyrrell Pigrome and signed Matthew McKay, bringing their total to six quarterbacks.

With an already crowded quarterback room, the Ottawa Redblacks did not hold back on adding more to the roster after releasing quarterbacks Tyrrell Pigrome and signing Matthew McKay to contracts on Friday.

Pigrome played with Ottawa and for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers earlier in 2023. He played in 17 games last year rushing for 109 yards and six touchdowns while also completing three passes for 46 yards.

His college career consisted of four years of Maryland, one at Western Kentucky and one at Towson. Pigrome finished with 5,018 passing yards and 1,541 rushing yards, scoring 46 total touchdowns.

McKay is making his first appearance in the CFL after being in college from 2018-22. Most recently, he signed a letter of intent with the San Antonio Brahmas of the UFL in December before being released.

He played for NC State, Montana State and Elon, throwing for 5,708 passing yards and 873 rushing yards. McKay scored 51 touchdowns in four seasons played.

The Ottawa roster has six quarterbacks so far this offseason. Jeremiah Masoli and Dru Brown are most likely the top two QBs on the depth chart and should battle for the starting job, but the other four should make for an interesting competition once training camp starts.

The Redblacks open the season on June 13 against the Bombers at home.
