Champions League Final Referee Szymon Marciniak Could Be Stood Down By UEFA After Speaking As Guest Of Far-Right Politician

Referee Szymon Marciniak could be stood down from this season's UEFA Champions League final.

Marciniak, who took charge of the 2022 FIFA World Cup final, was selected last month to oversee Manchester City's clash with Inter Milan on June 10.

But he has since become the subject of a UEFA investigation after allegedly featuring as a guest speaker at a networking event organized by far-right politician Slawomir Mentzen this week.

According to The Guardian, the 42-year-old Polish referee spoke at an event on Monday that had been set up by Mentzen, the leader of Poland’s Confederation party.

Mentzen said back in 2019: "We stand against Jews, gays, abortion, taxation and the European Union."

Two years later he produced a beer called White IPA Matters in an attempt to mock the Black Lives Matter movement.

After being approached for a comment by The Guardian, UEFA said in a statement on Thursday: "UEFA is aware of the allegations surrounding Szymon Marciniak and is seeking urgent clarification.

"UEFA and the whole football community abhor the 'values' that are promoted by the group in question and takes these allegations very seriously.

"A further announcement will be made tomorrow, after reviewing all the evidence."
