BC Lions Extend Star QB Through 2026 Season

The BC Lions extended their star quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. on Wednesday, keeping him with the club through 2026.

A priority for the BC Lions this offseason was to make sure quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. stuck around for a long time. That became a reality Wednesday when the team extended Adams’ contract through the 2026 season.

“It’s a huge honour for me to be under centre for this great organization for at least three more years," Adams said in a statement released Wednesday. “When you factor in the key players who have committed to the franchise, combined with a few great additions in free agency, it just further proves our commitment to winning and taking the next step in what is shaping up to be an exciting year for the Lions.”

Adams is coming off the best season of his CFL career, posting career-highs in passing yards (4,769) and passing touchdowns (31). He added 324 rushing yards and one touchdown in 18 games. It was just the second time in his career that he played every game during the year.

He joined the BC Lions in the middle of the 2022 season after the second of his two stints with the Montreal Alouettes. Adams played for the Als from 2016 through 2017, as well as 2018 through 2022. His best year with Montreal came in 2019 when he threw for 3,942 yards with 24 passing touchdowns and rushed for a league-high 12 additional scores, earning a spot on the CFL East All-Star team.

Adams also played for the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2017 and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats for the beginning part of the 2018 season. His career numbers include 13,261 passing yards and 80 touchdowns adding 1,431 rushing yards and 21 touchdowns.

With the loss of Mathieu Betts on the defensive side, BC needed to bring back their signal caller. Adams will go in as the starter for the Lions pending anything dramatic changing. He will be backed up by newcomers Dakota Prukop and Jake Dolegala, as well as Chase Brice.

The Lions start their season on June 9 on the road against the Toronto Argonauts.
