CFL All-Star Demerio Houston Joins Calgary Stampeders Among Roster Moves

The Calgary Stampeders make a splash in free agency by agreeing with CFL All-Star defensive back Demerio Houston on a two-year contract.

Tuesday saw a ton of big moves made by CFL teams as teams are making verbal agreements before the start of free agency Feb. 13. The Calgary Stampeders did not want to be left behind with a pair of moves that began by signing linebacker Tre Walker

Their big splash came with signing CFL All-Star defensive back Demerio Houston to a two-year contract, according to 3DownNation’s John Hodge. The deal includes $275,000 in hard money.

Houston is coming off its best season in the CFL last year with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, producing 50 tackles, seven interceptions and one touchdown in 15 games. The CFL named him to its All-Star team in 2023.

He just completed his third season in the CFL, spending every year with the Bombers. Houston has racked up 87 total tackles, nine interceptions and one touchdown in 30 games.

Walker joins Calgary after playing in the XFL last year with the Seattle Sea Dragons, producing 46 tackles and a half-sack in 10 games. He attended training camp with the Washington Commanders in 2022. During his 38 games for Idaho in college, he finished with 338 tackles, 3.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and seven pass deflections.

Calgary’s secondary gets a major boost with Houston as the unit hoped to add a playmaker. The team’s two leaders in interceptions last season were linebackers. This gives the Stampeders a veteran presence in the defensive backfield who should go into the season as a favorite to be one of the two starting corners.

Houston’s deal won’t be official until Feb. 13 as he is a pending free agent for Winnipeg.
