Hamilton Tiger-Cats Solidify Special Teams Signing Kicker, Punter to Contracts

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats re-signed key pieces to their special teams, including kicker Marc Liegghio and punter Kaare Vedvik to contract extensions.

With special teams being an undervalued aspect of football, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats made it a focus by locking up two key players. Kicker Marc Liegghio and punter Kaare Vedvik signed contract extensions on Monday.

Liegghio was the team’s starting kicker for all but one game last year, converting 41-of-47 field goals, with a long of 50 yards. He’s played 49 CFL games, including a two-year stint with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2021 and 2022. His career numbers include converting 83 percent of his field goals, with a career-long of 55 yards.

Vedvik spent part of last season with the Saskatchewan Roughriders before being traded to Hamilton in August. In 10 games, he punted the ball 50 times for 1,699 net yards, an average of 33.9 net yards per punt. He has played in the CFL for three seasons starting with the Riders in 2021, with a career average of 35.8 net yards per punt.

On the top kickers and punters of the CFL free agency list, CFL on Sports Illustrated/FanNation had Vedvik ranked sixth and Liegghio third.

Hamilton has needed help on special teams, especially after losing returner Tyreik McAllister to the NFL. For now, the Tiger-Cats have their kicker and punter back for the 2024 season.
