CFL QB Dane Evans Retires from Football

CFL quarterback Dane Evans announced his retirement from football on New Year's Day after five years in the league.

Quarterback Dane Evans announced his retirement from football after a five-year career in the CFL with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and BC Lions.

Evans took to social media to officially share his decision.

“Retirement. Something in pro football that is inevitable and something that I always viewed as ‘one day’. In my case, I can walk away from my playing days on my terms, which is rare in pro sports. This is something that I have been thinking and praying about for the last couple of months and I am officially announcing my retirement from pro football. I know this may come as a shock to some people but to those who truly know what I’ve put my body, mind, family, and heart through the last couple of years know this is the right time for this decision.”

He continued his statement by thanking his family, teammates and fans for being supportive over the years before sharing his plans for the next chapter of his life.

“Most people know I want to be a coach and I’ve already been pursuing down that path. When the time is right, I can’t wait to announce where the first stop on the next portion of this journey will be.”

Last season, his only with the BC Lions, Evans threw for 829 yards and four touchdowns to six interceptions in 16 games played. He served as the backup to Vernon Adams, helping the team go 12-6 and make it to the West Final.

His first four seasons were spent with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, where he had two seasons throwing for over 3,000 yards. Evans’ best season came in 2019 when he recorded 3,754 yards and 21 touchdowns to 13 interceptions. He led the team to the Grey Cup after a 15-3 record before losing to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

Evans finishes his CFL career with 9,636 yards passing and 49 touchdowns, adding 541 rushing yards and 10 touchdown runs.

Before the CFL, Evans spent training camp with the Philadelphia Eagles after going undrafted in the 2017 NFL Draft.

Evans finished his college career at Tulsa with 11,680 yards and 84 touchdowns. At the time of his graduation in 2016, he was in the top 10 in college football history in passing yards.

Evans was ranked fourth on our list of the top five CFL pending free agent quarterbacks.
