Chelsea's Winning Streak Against Crystal Palace Continues Thanks To Late Penalty Kick Awarded After VAR Review

Chelsea won a London derby for the fourth time this season by beating Crystal Palace 2-1 in the Premier League at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.

The Blues - who had beaten Wimbledon, Fulham and Spurs earlier in the 2023/24 campaign - went ahead in the 13th minute thanks to a simple finish from Mykhailo Mudryk following fine work by Malo Gusto.

After spurning two big chances to go 2-0 up, Chelsea were pegged back by Palace just before half-time when Michael Olise produced a slick two-touch finish at the far post.

But Chelsea won the game thanks to an 89th-minute penalty won and converted by Noni Madueke.

The spot-kick was not initially awarded by referee Michael Salisbury but a VAR review found that Madueke had been fouled by Eberechi Eze just inside the 18-yard box.

With Cole Palmer, Raheem Sterling and Christopher Nkunku all not on the field, there was a momentary pause as Chelsea's players appeared unsure who was supposed to take the penalty.

But manager Mauricio Pochettino then gave a signal to Madueke, who rewarded that show of faith by scoring the winner after sending Palace keeper Dean Henderson the wrong way.

Chelsea have now recorded 13 straight victories over Palace since October 2017.

The aggregate score of those 13 games has been 30-7 to Chelsea.
