Calgary Stampeders Bring Back CFL All-Star Linebacker

The Calgary Stampeders re-signed CFL All-Star linebacker Micah Awe.

In the latest moves made on the defensive side of the ball for the Calgary Stampeders, they are bringing back one of their top players from last season. The team re-signed linebacker Micah Awe on Friday.

Awe is coming off a record-breaking season producing the most defensive tackles in one year in franchise history with 134, which is the third highest in league history. He added six special teams tackles, two sacks, three interceptions and one forced fumble in 18 games. The league named him as a CFL All-Star for the first time in his career.

His CFL career started in 2017 with the BC Lions for two seasons before joining the Toronto Argonauts in 2019. In 2020, he would sign with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers never playing a down for the team with the season being canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. He would go on to play for the Ottawa Redblacks in 2021 and return to BC in 2022 before finishing the season with the Montreal Alouettes.

Awe has racked up 384 defensive tackles, 37 special teams tackles, six sacks, five interceptions and six forced fumbles in 83 CFL contests.

After graduating from Texas Tech in 2016, he found his way into the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Two years later, he would get another spot on an NFL roster with the New York Jets.

Calgary has been busy signing or re-signing multiple players including defensive lineman Ricky Walker, quarterback Matthew Shiltz, defensive back Kobe Williams, defensive back Demerio Houston and defensive back Branden Dozier this past week. Free agency for the CFL begins Feb. 13.
