Four Current, Former CFL Players Earn NFL Workouts

Several current and former CFL players landed workouts in the NFL in the last week, including quarterback Chris Streveler.

It’s been a common occurrence during the offseason to see players earn workouts whether they are still in the CFL or are former players. That trend continued this past week with the Chicago Bears and Pittsburgh Steelers hosting workouts with CFL players.

The Bears brought in former CFL quarterback Chris Streveler for a workout, a source told ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. Chicago also brought in Ottawa Redblacks linebacker Douglas Coleman III and Hamilton Tiger-Cats receiver/return specialist Tyreik McAllister, according to NFL reporter Aaron Wilson.

Former CFL quarterback Chris Streveler helped lead the Blue Bombers to a Grey Cup title in 2019.

Pittsburgh also worked out Edmonton Elks defensive tackle J-Min Pelley, according to Justin Dunk.

Streveler has been in the NFL since 2020 playing for the Arizona Cardinals, Baltimore Ravens, Miami Dolphins and New York Jets. He has thrown for 231 yards with one touchdown and one interception during that span.

In two seasons in the CFL with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, he threw for 2,698 yards with 19 touchdowns and 19 interceptions in 35 games. He added 1,167 rushing yards and 22 touchdowns including, leading the CFL in rushing touchdowns in 2019 with 12. Winnipeg won the Grey Cup in 2019 with Streveler playing a key role.

Coleman has spent the last two seasons playing for the Redblacks, recording 78 defensive tackles, five sacks, three interceptions and two touchdowns in 22 games. He did have one stop in the NFL playing for the Denver Broncos in 2020.

McAllister has landed his fifth workout of the offseason after previous stops with the Las Vegas Raiders, Arizona Cardinals, New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons. He had three touchdowns last season for Hamilton, including two receiving and one returning a missed field goal for a score.

Pelley was drafted by the Elks in the 2022 CFL Supplemental Draft after not being ruled eligible for the 2023 CFL Draft. He was granted a chance to play in the league one year earlier due to a law that helps players in financial hardship to be eligible for it. In two seasons, Pelley has recorded 19 tackles in 25 games.

CFL players can workout with NFL teams until Feb. 13, which is one day before CFL free agency begins. Players can’t sign with an NFL team until Monday.
