Saskatchewan Roughriders Name Toronto Argonauts DC New Head Coach

The Saskatchewan Roughriders hired Toronto Argonauts defensive coordinator Corey Mace as their head coach, according to reports.

The wait for one of the biggest storylines in the CFL offseason is over. The Saskatchewan Roughriders have their next head coach.

TSN’s Farhan Lalji reported Wednesday night that the Roughriders have agreed to terms with Toronto Argonauts defensive coordinator Corey Mace.

Mace was one of two candidates for the job. Winnipeg Blue Bombers offensive coordinator Buck Pierce was also a frontrunner.

Mace’s coaching career began with the Calgary Stampeders, where he coached their defensive line from 2016 to 2021, including a Grey Cup title in 2018. He previously played for Calgary from 2010 to 2015 and won a Grey Cup as a player with them in 2014.

He was hired by Argonauts coach Ryan Dinwiddie in 2021 as defensive coordinator. Mace played a key role in helping the Argos win the Grey Cup in 2022. This past season, the Argos had one of the best defenses in the league as they led the CFL with 42 takeaways. Toronto finished 16-2 before losing in the East Finals to the Montreal Alouettes.

Mace becomes the 45th head coach in franchise history, taking over for Craig Dickenson who coached the team for four seasons. Dickenson finished his tenure with a 34-34 record.

The Roughriders were 6-12 in 2023 and chose not to renew Dickenson’s contract.
