Toronto Argonauts Sign Three Americans To Close 2023

The Toronto Argonauts announced Friday the signings of American defensive backs Chris Steele and Leonard Johnson, as well as American wide receiver Justin Marshall.

Toronto will be bringing a trio of newcomers into the new year.

The team announced Friday the signings of American defensive backs Chris Steele and Leonard Johnson, along with American wide receiver Justin Marshall.

Steele was a member of the Calgary Stampeders last season but didn’t see the field, and he has also done brief stints with both the Seattle Seahawks and Pittsburgh Steelers since 2022. During his time at USC, he finished with 94 tackles, three tackles for loss, three interceptions, one fumble recovery and one forced fumble.

Johnson signed with the New York Giants after going undrafted in 2023, but he was released from the team in July. He spent his college career at Duke where he racked up 165 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, six interceptions, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and two sacks in 47 contests.

Marshall was on the practice roster for Toronto after signing with the team in October. He previously played for the Atlanta Falcons and Seattle Seahawks.

In college, Marshall transferred to the University of Buffalo for his final season of eligibility, catching 64 passes for 837 yards and nine touchdowns. Most of his college career was at Louisville, where he caught 37 balls for 544 yards and one touchdown in 37 appearances.

It has been a relatively quiet offseason for Toronto, with the focus being on bringing back players from last season’s squad, including Tommy Nield and Jamie Harry last week.
