Former CFL Quarterback Works Out for San Francisco 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers brought in a former CFL star quarterback Chris Streveler in for a workout earlier this week.

Former Winnipeg Blue Bombers quarterback Chris Streveler was brought in to work out for the San Francisco 49ers earlier this week.

San Francisco currently has three quarterbacks on the roster, including starter Brock Purdy, Sam Darnold and Brandon Allen. Purdy suffered an arm injury in the NFC Championship game against the Philadelphia Eagles last season, prompting NFL teams to have three quarterbacks.

The NFL rule is teams can have two active quarterbacks on gameday, with the third inactive quarterback being the emergency quarterback to come in if there are injuries to the first two. The 49ers could be looking at adding more options to their practice squad.

Streveler is no stranger to CFL fans after two strong seasons with Winnipeg in 2018 and 2019. He started 12 games in two years, throwing for 2,698 yards with 19 touchdown passes and 19 interceptions. His rushing stats were impressive, piling up 1,167 yards and 22 touchdowns.

In 2019 with Winnipeg, he accounted for 20 total touchdowns (eight passing, 12 rushing) while passing for 1,564 yards and rushing for 726 yards. Streveler finished as the CFL’s co-leader in rushing touchdowns. He played a key role in the Blue Bombers winning the 2019 Grey Cup.

After his successful two years in Canada, Streveler headed south to play in the NFL for the last three seasons. Two of those seasons were with the Arizona Cardinals and last season with the New York Jets. His career NFL stats include 231 passing yards with one touchdown and one interception, adding 75 yards on the ground.

Streveler has been a free agent since August after being waived by the Jets as the two reached an injury settlement. This could be the first sign that he is one step closer to getting back into the NFL.
