Hamilton Tiger-Cats Close to Naming Next Head Coach

With the Hamilton Tiger-Cats restructuring their football operations, there is a strong possibility Scott Milanovich could be the next head coach.

Tuesday brought on some surprise that the Hamilton Tiger-Cats were making changes to their football operations. Head coach Orlondo Steinauer was moved to president of football operations, with Ed Hervey becoming the new general manager.

That leaves the coaching position now open. The Tiger-Cats have already stated that they will be announcing their next head coach this week.

So, who is going to be the coach?

TSN’s Dave Naylor posted on X that current offensive assistant Scott Milanovich is expected to be named head coach and offensive coordinator. Naylor stated that Milanovich was expected to be the offensive coordinator in 2024, but now might be adding head coach to his title.

Milanovich has a long coaching history in the CFL that dates back to 2003 as the quarterbacks coach for the Calgary Stampeders. He has been a CFL offensive coordinator in the past with the Montreal Alouettes from 2008-11. Milanovich won two Grey Cups as an assistant in 2009 and 2010 with Montreal.

Milanovich has been a head coach twice in the CFL. First being with the Toronto Argonauts from 2012-16, going 43-47 and winning a Grey Cup in 2012.

He was also named Edmonton’s head coach in 2020, but the season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Milanovich would resign in 2021 without coaching a game to pursue NFL opportunities.

Milanovich joined the Tiger-Cats staff in May as a senior assistant coach. In August, Milanovich took over play-calling duties after offensive coordinator Tommy Condell and the organization parted ways. There had been speculation that he would take over as offensive coordinator starting in 2024.

Hamilton finished 8-10 in the regular season before losing to the Grey Cup champions Montreal Alouettes in the East Semifinal 27-12.
