Edmonton Elks Extend Former Florida Defensive Back, Sign Former SMU Receiver
The Edmonton Elks started the week by extending a key player while adding some speed on offense and special teams.
Edmonton announced Monday they signed defensive back Loucheiz Purifoy to a one-year contract extension. They also announced the signing of wide receiver and return specialist Charles Headen III.
Purifoy, 31, had 49 total tackles, three interceptions, and two touchdowns in 15 games with the Elks in 2023. His best season in 2022 with the BC Lions included 55 defensive tackles, nine special teams tackles, one sack, and three interceptions in 18 games. He was awarded a CFL West and CFL All-Star selection that season.
Purifoy made his CFL 2016 and has played for the Lions, Ottawa Redblacks, Saskatchewan Roughriders, and Elks in seven seasons. For his career, he has 331 defensive tackles, 30 special teams tackles, eight sacks, 19 interceptions, six forced fumbles, and two touchdowns in 116 games. Purifoy played at Florida from 2011-13 before declaring for the NFL draft after the 2013 season and went undrafted.
Headen is an electric return specialist coming off a strong 2023 season with the Frisco Fighters of the IFL. He finished with 1,143 return yards and six touchdowns in 15 games. Headen is no stranger to the CFL. He played for the Roughriders in 2022 and the Lions in 2023.
Headen played in 34 games at Division II’s Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania. He had 80 receptions for 909 yards and 14 touchdowns before transferring to SMU for his senior year. He played two games with the Mustangs.
Purifoy and Headen aren’t the only defensive back-wide receiver combo signed by Edmonton. Last week, they re-signed wide receiver Kyran Moore and signed defensive back Devodric Bynum.
