Saskatchewan Star Receiver Looking for NFL Workouts in January

Saskatchewan Roughriders wide receiver Shawn Bane Jr. has hopes of landing on an NFL team for the 2024 season.

Saskatchewan Roughriders wide receiver Shawn Bane Jr. has had an impressive rise to stardom, going from went from trying to crack the depth chart to being one of the best receivers in the CFL in the course of three years.

Bane’s breakout season now could potentially land him on an NFL team next year. While speaking with Michael Ball on the Sportscage show, Bane said his agent is working on getting him workouts with the New York Giants and the New York Jets sometime in January.

"We may or may not be in New York. We'll see what comes about after the New Year," Bane said.

Bane went undrafted in the 2019 NFL Draft before being picked up by the Atlanta Falcons. He was ultimately cut from the team during training camp, however.

A contract in the NFL is not out of the realm of possibility after his 2023 season with the Roughriders. In his first year with Saskatchewan, Bane caught 93 passes for 1,104 yards and four touchdowns. He finished seventh in the CFL in receiving yards, but led the league in receptions.

Even if an NFL opportunity doesn’t happen, Bane appreciates the chance to play football in the CFL.

“I can’t even put a true word or meaning on it,” Bane told Ball. “It just means a ton, super thankful.”

A new coaching staff will be leading Saskatchewan this year, and luckily, Bane is already familiar with them. Bane started his CFL career with two seasons for the Calgary Stampeders while new coach Corey Mace and offensive coordinator Marc Mueller were coaches on the staff. Bane spoke highly of the two men.

“Both of those individuals were super good to me in Calgary.”

Bane is one of 30 pending free agents for the Roughriders entering the offseason.
