England Forward Lauren James Sent Off For Violent Conduct Against Nigeria At Women's World Cup

Lauren James was shown a straight red card for violent conduct during England's round of 16 clash with Nigeria at the FIFA Women's World Cup on Monday.

Chelsea forward James - who had scored three goals in England's first three matches during the tournament - was sent off 87 minutes into the game in Brisbane.

Her dismissal came after she was initially shown a yellow card for standing on the backside of Michelle Alozie as the Nigeria player lay on the ground.

But following a VAR review, Honduran referee Melissa Borjas cancelled that yellow card and issued James with a red instead.

The game ended 0-0 at the end of 90 minutes and therefore went to extra time, which was also goalless.

England went on to win 4-2 in a penalty shootout.

James will be suspended when the Lionesses take on either Colombia or Jamaica in the quarter-finals.
