Montreal Alouettes Bring Back Three Canadians

The Montreal Alouettes re-signed a trio of Canadian players on Tuesday, including two linebackers and a fullback.

Three more players from last year's roster are returning to Montreal in 2024 as the Alouettes continue to focus on bringing back members of the 2023 Grey Cup champion squad.

The team announced Tuesday that they have re-signed Canadian linebackers Frederic Chagnon and Tyrell Richards, as well as fullback Alexandre Gagne.

“These three players were important pieces of our team in 2023 and we are pleased with their signings,” stated general manager Danny Maciocia. “Chagnon and Richards took more responsibility with us on defense and the best is yet to come. Gagné is always dominant in making tackles on special teams. He does a good job.”

Chagnon was selected in the third round of the 2017 CFL Draft by the BC Lions, where he played until 2019 before making his first stop in Montreal in 2020. After being released by the Alouettes in 2021, he signed with the Ottawa Redblacks for the rest of the season.

Montreal brought back Chagnon in 2022, and he appeared in 16 games before starting in six of his 18 appearances the following year. He recorded 35 total tackles and one sack in 2023.

Gagne was a big factor on special teams for Montreal last season, finishing with one defensive tackle and 16 special teams tackles, which were good for 12th in the league. The Saskatchewan Roughriders were his first home for three seasons before he signed with Montreal in 2021.

Richards was the Alouettes' first pick in the 2022 CFL Draft, and he finished the 2023 season with 10 defensive tackles, 11 special teams tackles, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and one interception returned for a touchdown in 11 games.

Seventeen players in total have been re-signed by the Alouettes since winning the Grey Cup in November.
