Sevilla became the first ever UEFA–CONMEBOL Club Challenge champions on Wednesday night by beating Ecuador's Independiente del Valle in a penalty shootout.

This was the pilot edition of a new competition pitting the winners of the UEFA Europa League against the reigning Copa Sudamericana champions.

The one-off game, held in Seville, had appeared to be going the way of Independiente del Valle after Lautaro Diaz calmly slotted the Ecuadoran side 1-0 up on nine minutes following an error by Kike Salas.

But Sevilla hit back in added time at the end of the second half when Pedro Ortiz leveled with a sharp finish from seven yards.

Instead of playing extra time, the match went straight to penalties.

Sevilla prevailed 4-1 in the shootout. The hosts scored all of their penalties but Marko Dmitrovic saved two of Independiente del Valle's three spot-kicks.
