Sheffield United Captain Chris Basham Suffers Horrific Ankle Injury

Sheffield United captain Chris Basham is unlikely to play again this season after suffering a horrific injury during Saturday's Premier League game against Fulham.

The 35-year-old defender - who has played almost 400 games for the Blades - broke his left ankle midway through the first half.

Basham's injury was not the result of a foul - or even a challenge - from a Fulham player.

It occurred when he kicked the ball with his right foot and his left ankle turned violently under his weight into an unnatural position.

The game was paused for more than 10 minutes while Basham was treated by medical staff on the pitch.

Basham - who was given oxygen for the pain - was then applauded off the field by fans of both teams.

He acknowledged the support by raising his arm.

Fulham went on to win the game 3-1.
